There is no single answer, but there is a good way to estimate it: measure the gap between where you are and where you need to be.
Measure the gap first
Take a full timed practice test to get your current band in each section. Then compare it with your target. The size of the gap decides the length of your plan, not the calendar.
A rough guide
| Gap to target | Typical preparation | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Half a band | 2–4 weeks | Format, timing and your weakest task type |
| One band | 1–2 months | Daily task practice plus weekly full tests |
| More than one band | 3 months or more | Building English skills, then test practice |
These are estimates for regular daily practice of 30 to 60 minutes. Consistency matters more than total hours.
What speeds it up
- Practising only the current format, not old task types.
- Spending most of your time on your weakest section.
- Getting feedback on Writing and Speaking instead of guessing.
- Retesting every one to two weeks to adjust the plan.
