Read in Daily Life uses the kind of text you read every day: notices, emails, menus and messages. It is designed to be quick, and the time you save here pays for the harder questions later.
What the task looks like
You read a short real-world text, from a line or two up to a short paragraph, then answer a few questions about it. The language is everyday, but the questions still test detail, purpose and inference.
A three-step method
- 01Read the question first so you know what you are looking for.
- 02Scan the text for the one detail the question needs: a time, a price, a rule.
- 03Check the answer against the exact words in the text, then move on.
Questions you will see
- Detail: what time, how much, where, who.
- Purpose: why was this message written?
- Inference: what does the writer suggest the reader should do?
How to practise
Use the English around you: product labels, bus notices, emails from your university. Ask yourself one detail question and one purpose question about each, and answer in under thirty seconds.
